Rachmaninov Concerto no 2 in Aberdeen

Saturday 30 June 2019, 7.30pm
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 2 with Grampian Youth Orchestra
Music Hall, Union Street, Aberdeen

The first time I performed a concerto with an orchestra was in 1981 when Timothy Reynish conducted me in Rachmaninov’s ‘Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini’ in Aberdeen’s Music Hall with the Grampian Regional Youth Orchestra. So I will be thrilled to be back in the same hall- in my home town- with young musicians from Aberdeen and surrounding areas some 38 years down the line! It is always touching and inspiring to return to work with what is the descendant of the original Grampian Region Orchestra- now called the GYO or Grampian Youth Orchestra, and I am honoured to be their joint patron along with the composer John McLeod. In the years since 1981 we collaborated in Rachmaninov’s Third (1993) then Tchaikovsky no 1 and Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ (both in 2014. Scott Matheson continues to manage the orchestra and bring incredible enthusiasm and inspiration to all the activities and rehearsals, and the orchestra is thriving as a result.
